THE FLY (1986) TITLE SEQUENCE

2025

This video details the events of David Cronenberg’sThe Fly (1986), showcasing the cast and crew of the movie. I spent about 40 hours illustrating the assets for this project and I am very proud of them!

my process

step one: thumbnailing

This project was especially difficult because I had to make a cinematic video without a title sequence for direct reference. Luckily I know this movie by heart, so I storyboarded the movie’s events in order.

I wanted to chronicle the story from start to finish. If they had never seen the film, I wanted to help viewers understand the story in only 2 minutes. On the other hand, for those who have seen it, I wanted my title sequence to be a reminder of the film’s events and an homage to the movie itself.

step two: illustrating

I created all of my illustrations using Clip Studio Paint, streamlining the process by tracing and referencing movie stills.

I originally chose a desaturated cyan color to be the basis of the entire movie, but I decided to go with a bolder color palette upon revision. The deep blues and electric greens do a better job of communicating the dark, sci-fi elements of the movie.

step three: assembly

Because this project was assigned alongside our introduction to the third dimension in After Effects, I implemented multiple 3D scenes.

In my video’s first pass, it was visually and audibly dull: the beginning was silent, the colors were bland, and the music was awkwardly placed. Upon revision, I infused life with a stronger color palette and sound effects.
